Spondylolisthesis

Updated: 2023-11-22

Description

A spinal condition in which a bone called a vertebra slips forward onto the bone below it.

Overview

Spondylolisthesis can occur in people who play sports that put stress on the bones in the lower back, such as gymnastics and football. Genetics also may increase risk.

Symptoms

If the vertebra slips too far, it may press on nerves and cause back pain. It also may crowd nerves and cause leg pain or numbness.

Treatments

Treatment of spondylolisthesis may include rest and medicine. If symptoms get worse or aren't relieved by other therapies, surgery may be needed.
