Eye pain
Updated: 2025-02-04
Description
Physical discomfort in the eye's surface or deep within the eye, ranging from a slight irritation to serious pain.
Self-care
Apply a cool or warm compress to the eye, whichever feels better. Over-the-counter artificial tear eye drops may soothe the eye, but don't use drops that clear redness.
When to seek immediate medical care
See a healthcare professional right away if:
- Have bad pain and vision changes, such as new-onset blurriness.
- See halos around lights.
- Have nausea, vomiting or headache.
- Have a fever.
- Can’t move or shut eye.
When to make a doctor's appointment
Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if:
- Have discomfort.
- Vision changes won't go away or get worse.
- Recent eye surgery.
