Venous ulcer
Updated: 2024-09-24
Description
A wound on the lower leg that does not heal, caused by veins not working well.
Overview
Venous ulcers may happen if veins in the legs aren't returning blood to the heart as they should. This may be due to family genes. Or veins may become strained or damaged due to blood clots, injury, aging and obesity.
Symptoms
Symptoms include legs that are swollen, achy or tired. The veins may look like they're popping out. Some people have changes in skin color and texture. The skin may feel dry, itchy or scaly before becoming an open wound.
Treatments
Treatment includes lying down with legs raised above the heart, applying pressure to the area, called compression therapy, and wound care. Sometimes surgery is needed.
