Liver spot

Updated: 2023-11-09

Description

Flat tan, brown, or black spots on the skin common with age.

Overview

Age spots are small, flat dark areas on the skin. Older adults, people with skin that sunburns easily, and people who've spent lots of time in the sun are most prone to them. Age spots are also called sunspots, liver spots, and solar lentigines.

Symptoms

The spots appear most on sun-exposed areas, such as the face and the back of the hands.

Treatments

Age spots don't need treatment. But if you want them to be less noticeable, procedures and medicated creams can fade or remove them.
