A buildup in the blood of lactic acid, a substance the body uses for energy.
Overview
There are various types of this condition. Depending on the type, causes include sepsis, very low blood pressure, heart failure, diabetes, cancer, HIV, short bowel syndrome and medicines such as metformin.
Symptoms
Lactic acidosis symptoms vary by the cause of the condition. Symptoms could include upset stomach, belly pain, weak or aching muscles, weight loss, slurred speech, and confusion.
Treatments
With lactic acidosis, the underlying cause needs to be treated. Other care may include fluids through a vein, medicines to raise blood pressure, antibiotics or breathing support. Without treatment, lactic acidosis can be deadly.
