Overview

Gastroenteritis can be caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites. Infection can happen by having close contact with a sick person, touching contaminated surfaces, sharing utensils, or having tainted food or water. Viral gastroenteritis is sometimes called stomach flu. It isn't the same as influenza, also called the flu.

Symptoms

Gastroenteritis symptoms can include an upset stomach, vomiting, watery diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, muscle aches and headache.

Treatments

Gastroenteritis treatment often involves resting at home and staying hydrated. Medicines may be needed to treat infections caused by bacteria or parasites. Other medicines can relieve serious diarrhea. Fluids given through a vein may be needed to treat serious dehydration.
